Dr. Douglas Marriott Named Senior Dean, Career Education and Workforce Development at Napa Valley College

Dr. Douglas Marriott has been named senior dean, career education and workforce development at Napa Valley College effective July 19, 2021, announced Dr. Sara Parker, assistant superintendent/vice president, academic affairs.
“Dr. Marriott brings demonstrated leadership skills to Napa Valley College,” said
                        Dr. Parker. “His experience as an educator, community college administrator, faculty
                        member, and workforce development program director, combined with his extensive experience
                        creating conditions in which students can access, thrive and succeed in acquiring
                        career-ready skillsets, will be a tremendous asset to the college.”
Dr. Marriott has more than 25 years of experience in strategic community and industry
                        partnerships, career education and workforce development, community college administration,
                        program development, management and teaching. Most recently, he served as the dean
                        of adult/community education and workforce development at Los Angeles Valley College
                        (LAVC), where he oversaw the City of LA Workforce Strategy Center, contract education
                        and extension programs, cooperative education, adult education noncredit workforce
                        courses, economic development programs, CalWORKs, The Family Resource Center and Helping
                        Hands food pantry.
In partnership with the City of Los Angeles, Dr. Marriott established the LAVC Workforce
                        Strategy Center, a network for all America Job Centers of California in Los Angeles
                        County, and the first and only community college to work with the entire City of Los
                        Angeles Workforce Development system to develop employer-driven programs that lead
                        to in-demand careers. He was also the lead administrator on development of Strengthening
                        Working Families, a program that brought holistic support service to both workforce
                        participants and student parents at LAVC. Additionally, he served as the volunteer
                        program board chair for MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity), a nonprofit agency in
                        San Fernando Valley, and as a board member of Project Grad Los Angeles, a nonprofit
                        helping first-generation college students persist and succeed.
Dr. Marriott taught in both the psychology and English departments at LAVC and directed
                        specially funded workforce development projects for the LAVC Workforce Training Program
                        prior to becoming a dean in 2017. Before joining LAVC, Dr. Marriott worked at the
                        Los Angeles Community College District, where he was the project director for the
                        Healthcare Career Advancement Academy and Job Training Department. He also worked
                        at the Literacy Network of Greater Los Angeles deploying workplace literacy programs
                        and as the instructional lead for Proyecto Avanzando, a program that helped migrant
                        farmworkers earn high school diplomas and advance on academic and career pathways.
This past year, he was selected to be part of the Coro Workforce Leadership Network,
                        which furthered his commitment to creating programs and partnerships that promote
                        economic equity.
“As the son of first-generation parents who both accessed higher education, I believe in the power and promise of California Community Colleges and in how transformative career education and workforce development can be,” said Dr. Marriott. “My career in education has been focused on partnerships with community and industry that help students succeed in their goals and remove barriers to their advancement. I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to bring my experience, passion and commitment to student success to Napa Valley College.”
In the position as senior dean, Dr. Marriott will be responsible for providing leadership, administration and supervision for the Career Education and Workforce Development division and associated programs and departments, including accounting; business; child & family studies and education; computer studies; computer information systems application; digital design graphics technology; hospitality, culinary & tourism management; LGBT education studies; machine tool technology; technical studies; viticulture & winery technology; welding; and work experience; as well as providing leadership and administration of Napa Valley College’s Upper Valley Campus and Community Education.
Dr. Marriott holds three bachelor’s degrees from the University of Washington in international studies, Spanish and communications. He also holds a master’s degree in education, curriculum and instruction from Chapman University and an EdD in educational leadership from UCLA, where his dissertation focused on career and workforce education in California. Dr. Marriott also studied at the University of Guadalajara in Mexico and the University of Sevilla in Spain and is fluent in Spanish. In addition, he spent nearly three years in the Dominican Republic focusing on community education while in the Peace Corps. He is married and has a daughter who will be entering third grade in the fall.
